VIMAGE Lab — Vision, MultiModal, And Geo Intelligence. Pioneering visual intelligence systems for India and the world.
To establish a globally leading Centre that advances computer vision and multimodal AI through foundational discovery, transformative applications addressing strategic and societal challenges, and the development of next-generation talent through world-class research and training.
The Centre aims to develop open-source, vision-centric multimodal foundation models that seamlessly integrate vision, language, and audio modalities to enable comprehensive understanding and interaction with real-world data...
These models will be designed to address the unique diversity and scale of Indian contexts—such as multilingual environments, varied visual scenes, and domain-specific applications—while also being adaptable for global use. By adopting an open-source approach, the Centre seeks to foster transparency, collaboration, and widespread adoption across academia, industry, and government. Such models will serve as foundational building blocks for a wide range of applications, including intelligent assistants, healthcare diagnostics, surveillance, education, and geospatial analysis, thereby accelerating innovation and reducing dependence on proprietary systems. The Center will also explore vision and multimodal perception for robotics, supporting intelligent and autonomous systems. In parallel, it will leverage remote sensing technologies for applications in agriculture, climate monitoring, and geospatial intelligence, addressing pressing environmental and societal challenges. Additionally, the Centre will invest in generative AI for vision, driving innovations in content generation, simulation, and data augmentation. Through this integrated approach, the CoE seeks to build both foundational technologies and domain-specific solutions that contribute to national priorities and global advancements in AI.
The IIT Bombay–HRTI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Vision, Multimodal AI, and Geo-Intelligence (VIMAGE) has been established as a strategic initiative to advance cutting-edge research and innovation in vision-centric artificial intelligence...
The Centre has defined a clear research direction focused on developing open-source multimodal foundation models integrating vision, language, and audio, while addressing critical application domains such as healthcare, robotics, remote sensing, and generative AI.
